Our three favorite unfinished symphonies of scaffolding and steel

1. CCTV HQ, Beijing – OMA
The Chinese national television HQ, in the heart of Beijing’s CBD, was always going to challenge conventional ideas of the skyscraper. Instead of conquering new heights, Dutch architects OMA, Jed by Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren, opted to create a striking form. Their design for China Central Television’s (CCTV) new home, nevertheless more than 200m high, is like a giant 3D Mandarin character. One of its columns will be dedicated to broadcasting, the other to research and education. Bridging the two at the top will be a management penthouse. Engineers Arup started work in 2004; 98,000 tonnes of steel later, the site boasts en elegant, part-leaning, part-cantilevered frame. ‘For a long time when we were planning it, I honestly couldn’t say it would work: confesses Arup’s Cecil Balmond. Ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games, many organizations are erecting sparkling new HQs in Beijing. But, when it’s completed later this year, the CCTV building is sure to stand out.
